Online Safety

Know It All

Know IT All for parents contains advice for parents and carers, and a special section for children and young people about keeping safe online.
In 2006 the UK Government Department of Education and Skills (DfES) commissioned Childnet to build on the original Know IT All resource and produce a separate CD-ROM specifically for parents. This was to be distributed through its Computers for Pupils initiative to some 100,000 families.

Following universal positive feedback of Know IT All for Parents, the DfES commissioned Childnet to further update this resource in 2007 with new content for young people and translation into eight further languages including British Sign Language. In May 2007 1 million copies of the CD rom were duplicated and made available for schools in England.

Filtering Software

The Know It All resource suggests using filtering software to filter access to inapropriate sites.  K9 Web Protection do a piece of software to do this and it works well.   Be aware though no filter is ever going to be 100% accurate, but just gives a first defence against the sites.

CEOP

The Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre is dedicated to eradicating the sexual abuse of children. They are part of UK policing and very much about tracking and bringing offenders to account either directly or in partnership with local and international forces.

They too have some very good information about keeping you and your children safe on the internet.
