A Church of England School

Mathematics Department Overview

The Mathematics Department is committed to providing a high-quality, inclusive education that enables every student to develop confidence, curiosity, and competence in mathematics. We believe mathematics is a powerful tool for understanding the world, making informed decisions, and opening doors to further study, careers, and lifelong opportunities.

Our curriculum is designed to be coherent, ambitious, and accessible to all learners. It builds deep conceptual understanding alongside procedural fluency, ensuring students can reason mathematically, solve problems, and communicate their thinking clearly. We aim to foster resilience, independence, and a growth mindset, so that students view challenge as a positive and essential part of learning.

Through effective teaching, regular assessment, and responsive support, we strive to ensure that all students — regardless of starting point — make strong progress. We celebrate achievement at all levels and actively work to remove barriers to participation and success in mathematics.

To support students with independent learning every student has a Sparx account tailored to their specific level.

Vision Statement

Our vision is to develop confident, capable, and curious mathematicians who are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and mindset to succeed in school and beyond.

We envisage a mathematics education where:

· All students believe they can succeed in mathematics

· Mistakes are valued as opportunities for learning

· Problem-solving, reasoning, and deep understanding are at the heart of every lesson

· Challenge is embraced and perseverance is developed

· Mathematics is seen as relevant, connected, and meaningful in the real world

· Students leave school with the numerical fluency and analytical skills needed for further study, employment, and active citizenship

As a department, we are committed to continually refining our practice, collaborating professionally, and using evidence-informed approaches to ensure the best possible outcomes for every learner.
